Salt was a basic ingredient in Indian cooking. The British salt act prohibited Indians from producing their own salt, they were required to purchase expensive British salt, many couldn’t afford it. March 12, 1930, Mahatma Gandhi and 78 satyagrahis embarked a 240-mile non-violence protest/march to the coast of Dandi. Reaching on April 6, Gandhi took a pinch of loose salt from the ocean, This technically meant that he was breaking the law. Thousands were arrested, including Gandhi. Gandhi’s actions led India to independence and influenced numerous leaders to practice non-violence.
